Living Well with Diabetes
By the team at Noble Care Hospital, Sikar
Diabetes means the sugar (glucose) level in your blood stays higher than normal. It cannot be "cured", but it can be controlled so well that you live a full, active life. The key is understanding four things: food, activity, medicines and monitoring.
1. Food โ the foundation
- Eat at fixed times; don't skip meals and then overeat.
- Prefer roti, dal, vegetables and buttermilk over rice-heavy or fried meals.
- Avoid sugar, sweets, sugary drinks and juices; fruit is fine in moderation (1โ2 portions a day).
- Small portions, more often, is better than one big meal.
2. Activity โ your free medicine
A 30โ40 minute daily walk noticeably lowers blood sugar and helps your medicines work better. Any regular activity counts โ walking, cycling, yoga, farm or house work.
3. Medicines โ take them regularly
Diabetes medicines and insulin work only when taken every day, on time โ not just when you feel unwell. Never stop or change the dose on your own; discuss it with your doctor first.
4. Monitoring โ know your numbers
- Check fasting and post-meal blood sugar as advised by your doctor.
- Get an HbA1c test every 3โ6 months โ it shows your 3-month average sugar.
- Once a year: kidney tests, eye check-up and a careful look at your feet.
Warning signs โ see a doctor soon
- Sugar readings staying very high or very low despite medicines
- Excessive thirst, urination or unexplained weight loss
- Wounds on the feet that don't heal, tingling or numbness
- Blurring of vision
Sudden shakiness, sweating and confusion can mean low sugar โ take glucose, sugar or juice immediately, and if the person doesn't improve, reach emergency care at once: 01572-271272.
